Title 2017 - Sebastien Palon's Last Vintage!
Attachment
Bulletin

Dear Arthur’s Cellar Wine Club Member:

Sadly, these are the last wines that Sebastien Palon, who was the talented wine maker at Domaine Palon, will craft for us. That is because the Palons were forced to sell the winery due to Sebastien’s ill health. If you would like to find out more, take a look at my article Eulogy for a Winery that appeared in a Gentleman’s Portion blog.

The Domaine Palon Wines on Offer:

We are pleased to offer you these two superb southern Rhônes from Domaine Palon – this time from the excellent but small 2017 vintage - the 2017 Côtes-du-Rhone ‘Cuvée Esparza’ and the white 2017 Vacqueyras ‘Blanc du Bary’. Their red Vacqueyras and Gigondas are not available.

Please let me know if you would like me to place your orders directly with LCBO.com for you.

2017 Côtes du Rhône ‘Cuvée Esparza’ – Domaine Palon – 16.0% Alc./Vol.  LCBO Product No. 522929   $19.35 the bottle

This is an excellent Côtes-du-Rhone from a a very good year. It is comprised of 69% Grenache, 16% Syrah and 15% Cinsault, all hand-picked and hand-sorted from the Palon’s five acres of vineyards in Vacqueyras (since sold). The yield was only 15 hl/ha! It is a dark and lustrous ruby red with hints of violet. The nose is of pronounced aromas of ripe cherries, plums, black currants, garrigue (the fragrant underbrush of Southern France), smoke, new leather, cassis and a hint of pepper. In the mouth it is very big, round and satisfying with delicate tannins and good length. Served slightly chilled (16°-17°C), it will go splendidly with roasts, grilled meats and medium cheeses. It will keep nicely for three to five years. This is very tasty stuff!

2017 Vacqueyras ‘Blanc du Bary’ – Domaine Palon - 13.5% Alc./Vol.  LCBO Product No. 523026       $27.20 the bottle

This luscious, refreshing white was crafted from 80% Clairette and 20% Grenache Blanc, both hand-picked from vines averaging more than forty-five years of age. The yield was but 13 hl/ha! It has seen some new oak, but not too much. It is a clear, bright yellow-gold colour with a vibrant nose of grilled almonds, peaches, pears, honeysuckle, vanilla, exotic spices, toast and minerals. It is very smooth and extremely well balanced – lots of fruit offset by a gorgeous acidity. It is fresh, complex and rich with wonderful flavours of peaches and pears. It would be perfect, served at about 8°C, with oysters, other shell fish, fish, goat cheese and rich poultry dishes. This delight is meant to be drunk young..

We will soon be off to Provence to meet the new Palon owners and to taste their vinous efforts, including a range of Côtes du Rhône. We’ll also be keeping an eye out for other candidates for Arthur’s Cellar.

Follow My Vinous Adventures on Gentleman’s Portion

I have contributed more than forty posts about my experiences in the wild and wacky world of wine to a delightful lifestyle blog called Gentleman’s Portion. The latest is called Lust Loomed Large at Latour. Please join me and my fellow contributors, Nigel Napier-Andrews and David Moorcroft, as we regale you with a good helping of everything great in life.

It would be most sporting if you would pass this note on to anyone you think might be interested in a couple of very, very good Southern Rhônes.

Many thanks and cheers!
